September Must-Go: Cornelia Parker

Author Editor - 1 minute read
Escape the city in favour of the beach and take a trip to Margate this month to visit the Turner Contemporary, where a new installation by Cornelia Parker RA will be open to the public.

Overlooking the North Sea, the gallery presents a picturesque location for the new exhibition. Made up of sixty flattened instruments from a brass brand, positioned in a circular formation. The name Perpetual Canon refers to a piece of music where a melody is played and imitated following a short delay.

Originally created in the North East of England, a region with a strong tradition of brass bands, the piece is described by Parker as “an anthem that is slowly winding down”.

Known for exploring the potential of matter through large-scale sculpture and installation, Parker’s work regularly takes commonplace objects and exploits them through processes like crushing or exploding. Here, Parker has compresses the instruments, which includes trumpets, tubas and more, as an act of silencing.

The project is part of RA250 UK, a series of exhibitions around the UK in celebration of 250 years of the Royal Academy of Arts. Parker’s installation will feature at the Turner Contemporary from September 14th 2018 until March 17th 2019, presenting the perfect excuse to visit the seaside town.
