To give you a hand navigating the funny old world of fashion, we’ve uncovered some mysteries of the fash pack’s bewildering lexicon. From shoes to suits to the new skirt shapes, we’ve cracked the code on some of fashion’s most bewildering buzzwords, so you can breeze through the season in style, sweetie.

Almond Toe – Inspired by the healthy snack we carry in our handbags, almond toe shoes have a curved, slightly pointed toe. Not as sharp as ladylike spikes and not as round as a pump, almond toes occupy a happy medium that’s both comfortable and super stylish. Don’t trust us? Test the trend with chunky biker boots.

Bauhaus – Coined to describe the 20th century German school of design, this colour-heavy movement recently took over the imaginations of designers at Paris Fashion Week, resulting in a catwalk littered with graphic shapes and retina-blasting colours. Channel the trend in our City Scape Dress, inspired by the stark architecture of Berlin’s skyline.

Co-ords – shortened from ‘co-ordinates’ and used to describe matching separates worn together. You might think taking inspiration from Cher Horowitz’s top-to-toe tartan is a little clueless (sorry), but you can dip your toe into this trend in a way that won’t scare the kids at the school gate. Try shaking up your office look with a tweedy textured blazer-and-trousers combo.

Coatigan – Half coat, half cardigan, this little wonder will be your life saver when it’s not quite cold enough to don a coat (we live in hope!) but a little too nippy for only one layer. Its key features are a chunky knitted finish, a cosy collar and a nonchalant slouchiness that makes it the perfect companion for throwing on over jeans and loose layers. Don’t forget to cinch in your waist with a skinny belt to sharpen up your silhouette.

Midi Skirt – With its demure, ultra-flattering length, the midi skirt is a new contender for official style staple status. Whether you choose a full fifties-style shape, a shorter A-line style adorned with print and pleats, or a striped tube-style skirt, be sure to balance the midi’s leg-lengthening proportions with a chic cropped sweater.

Pleather – Thanks to its high-shine finish and 80’s vibe, you might be tempted to keep pleather firmly where it belongs – in another decade. But this humble leather substitute – also known as PU or polyurethane – has come a long way since its Top of the Pops days. Lightweight and tactile, a statement piece in buttersoft pleather will instantly update your new-season wardrobe. A simple shift is transformed into an achingly cool buy-me-now dress that’ll speed straight to the top of your lust list, whilst the humble A-line skirt gets a high-fashion overhaul when reworked in lightweight pleated PU layers. Forget what you thought you knew about pleather, because it’s back with a vengeance for AW14.
