In conversation with Julia from Little Room Blooms

Author Editor - 3 minute read
To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, we’re putting the spotlight on inspiring female creative talents. From marble artists to florists, we’ll be showcasing their creative talents, proudest moments, female inspirations and more.

Our third female creator is London based florist Julia. She is the founder of the sustainable floristry brand, Little Room Blooms. Her desire to create affordable everlasting flower bouquets to spice up any room no matter how big or small it is, is helping to reinvent the industry. We caught up with Julia to explore her story, creativity, and biggest achievement.

Julia, can you tell us a little bit about yourself...

Hello! I am a film and television actor living in London and I now also call myself a dried flower florist! I am the founder and director of Little Room Blooms.

How did you get into dried flower floristry?

When the acting industry ground to a halt in March 2020 I started putting together dried flower arrangements for friends and family. I had started making them for myself as an alternative to houseplants (my housemates would sometimes unintentionally kill them whilst I was away on a job!). I was then encouraged by friends to go for it as a way to fill my time in lockdown and share my creations. Sustainability was incredibly important to me so I went about working out a way to launch a company that would be affordable yet sustainable.

From all your dried flower arrangements, which one is your favourite & why?

My favourite is White Beach. It is special to me because it has evolved from one of the first bunches I ever put together: Sandy Beach. It’s also neutral so works well in any space and I think it suits many tastes. I love the fluffy pampas grass in it too.

How would you describe your style of floristry?

Experimental! I like to play with lots of different flowers and don’t mind if the colours or textures contrast.

Where is your favourite place to get creative?

In my studio with music turned up full blast after having a chinwag with my incredible studio-mate Georgie - she inspires me lots!

What advice do you have for any aspiring dried flower florists?

Get creative! Play with lots of different stems to start with. Try not to buy too much of one thing to begin with because you may create a bestseller bunch from a combination you didn’t expect!

What’s been your biggest achievement/proudest moment/career highlight so far?

If we are talking blooms - I’m so proud of building the brand I have throughout a national lockdown and creating a relationship with our loyal customer base who continues to shop with us now. Furthermore, it's been a huge achievement for us, as a small business, to work with really cool brands...like you guys!

What Does International Women’s Day mean to you?

It serves as a reminder to me to support and celebrate the incredible women of the world not just on this day but the rest of the year too.

Is there a woman that has inspired you most in life/your career?

It may be cliché to say, but of course, it’s my mum! She is so creative and wildly talented yet incredibly humble. She never has a bad temper and has always offered me kind, gentle, non-judging support with a side of dry humour. I aspire to be even a smidgen of the woman she is one day.

What’s next for you? Anything exciting plans/projects for 2022?

I have a few acting jobs on the horizon, including a series I was meant to shoot over two years ago - covid had other plans! I am immensely excited to crack on with that. There are inspiring things happening at LRB, including taking on a business partner and expanding the business. I hope this year we can further our journey into sustainability and build our customer base in the UK.
